Child Abuse & Neglect

Protecting children from child abuse and neglect takes a community effort.  You, as educators and professionals may come into contact with children subject to abuse and neglect.  In many cases, you may be the first person to recognize suspected child abuse and neglect.  It is important to recognize it, and even more important to know the steps to take to report abuse and neglect.

This course was developed to provide information that will enable you to respond appropriately to suspected child abuse and neglect cases, which may confront educators and professionals involved with children.

This is a 6-hour initial training and a 3-hour refresher training as required by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

 

Training is valid for 3 years. 

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course offers basic instruction for staff to help them understand the typical profiles of child abusers and the definitions of various forms and aspects of neglect and abuse.

The consequences of not reporting suspected neglect or child abuse are covered.  Laws regarding the failure to report any abuse may be punishable by civil or criminal liabilities. Additionally covered is who is required to report child abuse, as well as, the guidelines and protocols for reporting are also addressed in these lessons.​

 

WHO WILL NEED TO TAKE THIS COURSE?

Virtually anyone can benefit from this course. It is mandatory for certain professions. Professionals who may take this course are, but not limited to:

  • Attorneys,

  • Physicians, hospital interns, and residents,

  • Dentists, podiatrists, practitioners of medicine, registered nurses,

  • Other healthcare professionals,

  • School psychologists, independent marriage/family therapists,

  • Administrators or employees of certified childcare agencies, or

  • Public or private children's services agencies,

  • Teachers, school employees,

  • Social workers, employee of a county department job and family services,

  • Homemaker services employees,

  • And many more!
